Hi! I have a 25 gallon aquarium with a heater. I was wondering where is the best best spot to place the thermometer? Currently, the heater is at one end of the tank along the back wall (as that is the only place it will fit with the hood) and the thermometer is at the same end, but on the front wall. Am I just measuring the temperature at that end of the tank, and the other end could be cooler, or is the heat probably the same throughout? Thanks!

Its just a standard thermometer. It broke inside a circular container, so I am not sure if liquid leaked out of the container. Is it possible for mercury to spill out of the thermometer through the pore, and onto my backpack. How should I throw it away? What dangers are associated with broken thermometers?
The liquid inside the thermometer was red.
