Why should you not use a thermometer intead of a stirring rod to stir the ice water mixture?

In other words: why use a stirring rod instead of a thermometer.

  1. hotstuff says:

stirring rods are cheaper and safer to stir with because that’s what they were made for. It’s probably a safety issue more than anything.

  2. KaKa says:

because it could break and then if your using a mercury thermometer that could be bad

  3. kookiekim77 says:

We use a stirring rod instead of the thermometer because there would be a considerable amount of heat transfer from the tip of the thermometer to the mixture which could put errors in the result.

Also, this is done so that the final temperature of the ice mixture could be achieved first before the reading would be done so that there would be stability and constance in the reading.
    :)

well if you do go to thhs, then thankyou because i always see that youre putting up questions from our chem lab.

and i always find this helpful.

    my answer:
    1. maybe if the heat/cold has some kind of reaction it could break the glass
    2. STIRRING rod is made for STIRRING and thermometer is for measuring temperature akaaaaaa…you should use the equipment properly by using them only for the purpose they were made for.

but dont take that wording. im using it lol
